Yesss… Transmission has done it again! The Vandals will be back in Austin this Friday, June 13th at the Mohawk on Red River. The first time I saw the Vandals was at Warped Tour ’04 in San Antonio, but the first time in Austin was 6 years later during Fun Fun Fun Fest 2010 (another Transmission event) along with fellow punk rockers, Dwarves, Descendents (replaced DEVO), The Casualties, and Bad Religion whose lead singer, Greg Graffin, gave me another extensive vocabulary lesson at the X Games Austin which took place at COTA this past weekend. Pretty epic weekend to say the least. That FFFFest year, I also got to catch MGMT, A-Trak, RJD2, and GWAR (RIP Dave Brockie) for the first time as well.
Ok.. Enough of my punk rock fanboy flashback! We all know that the Vandals are going to tear it up at the Mohawk. They haven’t released an original full-length LP since Hollywood Potato Chip (listen here) in 2004, but their discography has yet to be booted from my playlists since. Their innovative guitar riffs, lyrical wit, and comical song theme content has definitely stood the test of time over the past 10 years. You can’t expect anything less than a full-throttle punk rock show with the Vandals on any bill.
Other bands on the bill are our homies Krum Bums, Threes Away, and Buried Cities. Krum Bums, whom we’ve covered multiple times over the past few years, never cease the opportunity to get the crowd going whether they’re the nights headliner or direct support like they are for this show. Regardless, expect my homie, Trae (guitarist), to thrash out some killer riffs and Dave Tejas (lead vocals) to jump around, scream, and get krunk, which will only get his Tocayo (“namesake” en ingles), Dave Quackenbush (Vandals lead vocals), to step it up to the next level to close out the show.
Threes Away (ex members of Born to Lose + another homie and new member, Al Shire) will be opening the night with some well executed riffs, and heavy melodic backups. I got to see their live set for the first time since they were Born to Lose at Badlands earlier last month with some other great local punk acts including Fight Plan, No Holiday, and Scrotongues! They will definitely help set the tone for the rest of the night with their energetic sing-along type of style.
Last but not least, it was just announced that Buried Cities, who are also my homies and am currently building a website for, will be playing the official after show at Mohawk (indoors) to close out this epic lineup! Don’t be surprised if the party gets even crazier in this indoor dive setting. Smaller shoes to fill sometimes makes for a better show (says me) and I won’t be surprised if they maintain the nights energy even after The Vandals close it out on the outdoor stage.
It’s been a while since I’ve been this stoked about a local punk rock show, and I’m sure there are tons more local Austin punk fans that feel the same. On that note, there are still tickets available on the Transmission Events website for $18… And if you’re still contemplating on what to do, slap yourself in the face, get it together and buy your ticket, because if not, you’re really going to be fucking up if you miss this one… Hope to see y’all out in the pit fuckers!
