Preview: The Faint Stopping by The Belmont – 5/2/14

Not quite the frozen north, but still a far cry from the Texas heat, Omaha, Nebraska was where The Faint originated. Skater buds Todd Fink, Clark Baechle (pronounced BECK-lee), Dapose, and Joel Peterson (along with former member Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes) started playing tunes just as a hobby. Eight albums (remixes included) later they are still playing a very unique brand of music.

Scheduled to play the Belmont in the ATX on May 2, these boys from the “Gateway to the West” have developed a style that is all their own. Often booked as post-punk, new wave or even electronica, the Faint have taken aspects from various genres and created a new style… Punktronica! (copyright El Gato). Taking absurd aspects of punk like crazy tongue-in-cheek lyrics and combining them with catchy dance beats is their bread and butter approach. Great dance tracks like “Desperate Guys”, the lead track from their 2004 Ep, Wet from Birth, combine violin solos from Niccolò Paganini’s Caprice No. 5 with lyrics like “I was acting indifferent at the merch booth putting on makeup”, and a killer electronic beat to bust a move too.

A throwback in many ways to the days of Depeche Mode or New Order, they make a clear distinction by keeping it fresh. “Southern Belles in London Sing”, another track from Wet, is a lovely ballad with great keyboard work and classical notes, and is a sharp contrast to “Desperate Guys”. The Faint have established an underground following in many discothèques both here in the U.S. and abroad. Each release has prompted both club goers and Joe Pencilpusher to run out and buy a record. “Agenda Suicide”, the breakout track from Danse Macabre, is still getting play in clubs from Monterrey Mexico to Ibiza, Spain.

A few years and some lineup changes haven’t slowed them down a bit. They were touring secretly in true Sex Pistols form as Depressed Buttons and even made an appearance on the quirky kids show “Yo Gabba Gabba”! The Faint just dropped Doom Abuse April 8, 2014. The video for “Evil Voices” made its premiere this month on April 16th, and already has 13,000+ hits in 10 days! Notable tracks already emerging include “Lessons from Darkness”, “Damage Control” (very gnarly), “Mental Radio” (great guitar work) and the punk rock anthem hopefully soon to be a classic “Scapegoat”! So to all my Austin/S.A./Central Texas homies, get your silly asses down to The Belmont on May 2 and catch a rockin’ show! Make them play “Scapegoat”! If you can spot “El Gato” roaming those hallowed halls of punk legends… the first Lone Star on the tally is on me! Catch you on the flipside homies!
