When I received news of a set interview with Shawn Crahan from Slipknot, my jaw dropped. When their self-titled debut album dropped in 1999, the songs “Wait and Bleed”, “(Sic),” “Surfacing,” and “Spit It Out” did not stop playing in my home. Seeing Slipknot live is an incredible experience. These guys have so much energy when they go on stage. They killed it when I had the privilege of checking them out during their “Tattoo The Earth Tour 2000” in Mercedes, TX. Not only was this their debut, but they were headlining along with other amazing bands like Slayer, Sepultura, Tiger Army, The Unseen and Sick of it all.
Percussionist, Shawn Crahan (also known as, “Clown” or “#6”), made an appearance at the SXSW panel for a Q & A. We were able to catch up with Shawn at his SXSW party and book preview at The Jr. (formerly Emo’s Jr.). Shawn is a very nice and down to earth kind of guy who enjoyed SXSW just as much as everyone else did. One of Shawn’s highlights was checking out Pennywise and running into the different aspects that SXSW had to offer.
“SXSW is the Mardi Gras of music, not Mardi Gras on crack,” said Crahan.
Shawn let us in on the release of his first photography book titled “Apocalyptic Nightmare Journey”, and it surely has some sick paintings along with some creatively manipulated photos.
“This book has been in the making for twelve years,“ said Crahan. “It was done by three, but we were waiting for the right time.”
Finally the release of his book will hit wherever books are sold on June 19. Loving and appreciating all of his fans, Shawn even brought two young fans into the interview stating “Music is the closest that I come to God.” Shawn, along with Slipknot will be coming back later in the year to Texas for Mayhem Fest with Slayer, Motorhead and Anthrax.
